THE WALLS
IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK, THEY WOULD SING…
The focal piece of the taproom is a special site-specific mural installation created by the local artist known as Porkchop. Many of the posters used on our walls were designed by fellow local artists, just as many of the photos were taken by photographers familiar to the Asbury Park music scene. The inspiration behind this wall is the rich and vibrant Asbury Park musical history and heritage. With good tunes in his headphones, Porkchop selected and arranged this special homage to the musicians that have contributed to the unique musical past of our “City by the Sea”, where music lives. From ceiling to floor, every single pass, poster, ticket & photo portrays artists who have graced the stages of Asbury Park over the decades. Well, except for just one event that took place outside of Asbury Park, but we’re going to let you find that one on your own…
On July 20, 1963, for just $2.50-$5.00, you could have seen Ella Fitzgerald perform at Convention Hall.
If you aren’t familiar with the name Marie Castello, you probably just didn’t know Madam Marie’s last name. Known for her iconic blue shop on the boardwalk, Madam Marie predicted the success of 17 year old Bruce Springsteen one summer in the 1960s.
Despite an epic heat wave in Asbury Park, crowds of eager fans swarmed the town to see the Rolling Stones take the stage at Convention Hall on July 3, 1966. This would be the same summer that Springsteen played his first gig in AP with the Castiles.
After turning down Woodstock, Led Zeppelin played two sets at Convention Hall on August 16, 1969 with support from Joe Cocker.
If you were a punk in the 80’s, the Asbury Park Boardwalk was the place to be for Memorial Day Weekend 1982. The Clash got the town rowdy as hell for 3 shows at Convention Hall, and one night Joe Strummer ended up in the hospital after a cherry bomb was thrown from the crowd- not to worry though, after a quick bandage job, he was back at the Empress Hotel for the afterparty.
On October 30, 1988, Johnny Cash was given an American flag by the Oceanport VFW Post 10129 at the Berkeley Hotel- which he was a partial owner of. In fact, on July 27,1990, Cash’s performance at The Paramount was recorded and released in 2007 as The Great Lost Performance.
On July 18, 1999, Warped Tour rolled into Asbury Park. Did you campout at the Greg Stage all day to Catch Blink-182 at 3pm & The Bouncing Souls at 5pm?
In 2000, The 13th episode of The Sopranos Season 2 was filmed on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Springnuts and Sopranos fans scoped out the scene and were excited to catch glimpses of legendary E Street Band member, Little Steven Van Zandt.
On June 26, 2001, Green Day played Convention Hall, and made the crowd go wild when they came back out for a 6 song encore- almost as wild as when they rocked the beach in 2022 during their headlining performance at Sea. Hear. Now.
The Stone Pony is no stranger to a festival, and in 2002, Skate and Surf debuted at the iconic venue. By 2003, the festival upgraded to Convention Hall & if you had been at the Paramount Theater at 4:55, you would have caught Fall Out Boy in their prime emo-ness (we’re talking A LOT of eyeliner).
Another festival was born in 2003, and the very first installment of Bamboozle kicked off at the Stone Pony. The official event title was The Great Bamboozle. While the festival switched up locations from year to year, it often found itself in Asbury Park. In 2012, The Gaslight Anthem & Bon Jovi melted thousands of faces in the city by the sea.
If you were in the crowd at Convention Hall on December 9, 2011, you were one of the lucky ones. The Boss himself got on stage to perform with The Gaslight Anthem for their song "American Slang", and the local legends proceeded to blow everyone’s minds.
It was a warm evening when Willie Nelson played the Stone Pony Summer Stage on September 2, 2016. We heard he threw one of his red bandanas into the crowd- anyone know who caught it? We’ll trade you for a case of beer & one of our super dope bandanas.
In 2017, Jersey natives The Front Bottoms brought their annual holiday soiree, Champagne Jam, to Asbury Park for the first time. In 2018, Asbury Park Brewery’s “Extra Dry Brut Champagne Jam” made its debut to the event in sixtels, and By 2020, the beer had its very own can!
On March 22, 2018, Panic! At the Disco surprised us all with a secret show at the Stone Pony to celebrate the beer collaboration between APB & the band, IPA!TD. If you stopped by the brewery, you may have been lucky enough to be served a beer by Brendon Urie himself.
Were you lucky enough to be sweat on by Butch Walker when he hopped off the House of Independents stage to dance with the crowd in October 2022? What a party that was!
In the early 2000’s, Founder Bob McLynn’s band the Step Kings could be found at the Stone Pony with SOD, VOD, Fury of Five.
Co-Founders Mike Pimco & Chris Cornell met back in high school where the idea for their band, Kid With Manhead was born. They proceeded to tear up the Asbury music scene and beyond, ultimately touring with the likes of Bad Religion, Offspring, & Blink 182.
